Tacoma

The Tacoma is yet another compact pickup truck from Toyota lineup. The truck debuted in 1995 and is still in production. The Tacoma is similar to the the Toyota Hilux, Toyota 4Runner and the Toyota Tundra, which replaced the T100. The Tacoma was very well recieved in the American market and is the best selling mid-size pickup in America.

The rivals of the Tacoma in the market are the GMC Canyon, Ford Ranger as well as the Nissan Frontier. The truck is offered with a choice of 2 door as well as 4 door truck body with front-engine and choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Till date, there have been two generations of the Tacoma. The first generation of the truck was introduced in the market in 1995. It was derived from the successful, Toyota Hilux. The truck came with a choice of 3 engines: 2.4L 4 cyl gasoline at 142 bhp , the 2.7L 4 cyl gasoline at 150 bhp and another 3.4L 6 cyl gasoline engine rated at 190 bhp of power. The 2.7L variant was available with 4x4 drive. In 2000, the Toyota introduced Automatic Differential Disconnect (ADD) system in the 4x4 models.

The 2nd generation Tacoma was launched in 2004 at the Chicago Auto Show. The new version was prettier, bigger, and more powerful than the previous model. A wide range of configuration were available for the buyers this time(18 in number to be exact). These included variants of Regular Cab, Extended Cab as well Crew Cab bodies. The engine was a 2.7L inline 4 VVTi gasoline rated at 159 bhp mated to 4 speed auto, 5 speed auto or 5 speed manual transmission. A model of the Tacoma, the X-Runner featured a 4.0L V6 engine rated at power packed a whopping 236 bhp with a 6 speed manual transmission. Other features included Down-Hill Assist Control (DAC) and Hill-Side Assist Control (HAC) and an optional feature called the Toyota Racing Development (TRD).
