Land Cruiser

land cruiser toyota car models

The Toyota Land Cruiser is by far one of the widely known SUV's from the Toyota stable. First launched in 1954, the four wheel drive Land Cruiser is still in production. The present generation of the Land Cruiser is the seventh gen of the illustrious and highly acclaimed vehicle.

The car was initially built as a military vehicle for the Imperial Japanese Army in 1941. It was named the AK10 but could not reach beyond the prototype phase. In 1951, Toyota created the Jeep BJ, inspired by the Willys Jeep for the military. It was an immediate success and was sold till 1954 when it was re christened as Land Cruiser. The engine was upgraded in the new Land Cruiser with a 3.9L engine giving a power output of 125 bhp. In 1955, the Land Cruiser 20 series was launched which was first in line of the many Toyota Land Cruiser series spanning over 50 years.

The 40 series was launched in 1960 which was an upgraded version of the famous FJ40. The car came strapped with the same capacity 3.9L gasoline engine and also a diesel variant in some south american markets. The 60 series was launched in 1980. The Land Cruiser, in its new form, shed the rugged offroad looks and was more stylishly designed for the SUV market which had sprung up. It came with a 4.0L 6 cylinder petrol and 3.4L 4 cylinder diesel engine. THe car became one of the largest selling Toyota vehicles with global sales exceeding 1 million. The 70 and the 80 series were launched over the years and were also as successful as the previous series.

The 90 series was launched in 2000, the 50th anniversary of the vehicle. It was based on the hugely popular Land Cruiser Prado, first launched with the 70 series. The car was fitted with a 4.7L V8 engine mated to a 5 speed automatic transmission. The car was fitted with a number of technological features such as EBD, VSC, Active TRAC, anti skid, Downhill Assistance, etc to enhance its offroad capabilities.
